In this episode of “The Van Wirdum Sjorsnado,” hosts Aaron van Wirdum and Sjors Provoost discussed the newly released Bitcoin Core 0.21.0.

Bitcoin Core 0.21.0 is the 21st and latest major release of the Bitcoin Core software, the oldest and most important Bitcoin node implementation, which is often also regarded as the reference implementation for the Bitcoin protocol.

Guided by the Bitcoin Core 0.21.0 release notes, van Wirdum and Provoost discussed this release’s most important changes. These include the new mempool policy for rebroadcasting transactions, Tor v3 support, peer anchors for when the node restarts, BIP 157 (Neutrino) for light clients, the new testnet called Signet, BIP 339 (wtxid relay), Taproot code, RPC changes including a new send RPC, ZeroMQ, descriptor wallets, the new SQLite database system and the satoshi-per-byte fee denomination.

For each of the new features, the hosts discussed what the features are, how they will change using Bitcoin (Core) and — where applicable — what the end goal is. (In Bitcoin Core development, new features are often part of a bigger process.) For any feature they discussed on a previous episode of “The Van Wirdum Sjorsnado,” they also mentioned the relevant episode number.

This week for the “Bitcoin Magazine Podcast,” Christian Keroles sat down with long-time Bitcoiner and builder Douglas Bakkum. Bakkum is the CEO and cofounder of hardware wallet manufacturer Shift Crypto. He and his team have been working hard from very early on to create a hardware wallet experience that is suitable for newbies but has the most important advanced features for maximum sovereignty, safety and trustlessness.

This was a very wide-ranging conversation covering Bakkum’s history, the inspiration for Shift Crypto, the BitBox02 and all about bitcoin cold storage and custody.

The conversation got pretty technical, covering the nuances around wallet UX and new innovations around multisig. Bakkum is hopeful for the future of multisig but is also skeptical of folks embracing it too early. There are still lots of kinks that need to be ironed out, according to Bakkum, even though Bitcoin multisig has gotten immensely better.

Interview: Making Bitcoin Accessible For Everyone With Randy McMillian

21/01/2021 by Idelto Editor

YouTube Video

For this episode of Bitcoin Magazine’s “Meet The Taco Plebs,” I was joined by Randy McMillian (@RandyMcMillan), a fellow pleb that I met on “Bitcoin Kindergarten” who has been sharing some good knowledge and wisdom on that show lately.

In this episode, we discussed certain interesting topics in Bitcoin that McMillan is most fond of, including repricing time. One very interesting topic that we got into was ditching the old fiat way of telling time (calendar year) and pursuing a new method: telling time by blocks. This is an interesting concept that I think has already caught on among Bitcoiners on Twitter as I’ve seen ongoing discussions about it. It’s a pretty cosmic idea but definitely not impossible to pull off.

McMillan also shared a project he’s working on, for which he is researching Bitcoin accessibility for the visually impaired. He is currently researching Bitcoin usage for not only the visually impaired, but also the tactile impaired and dyslexic. Bitcoin is for everyone and that obviously includes the partially/fully blind, and McMillan wants to make Bitcoin easy to use for them.

You can support McMillan’s project here.

Below are some of McMillan’s most interest thoughts shared during the interview. And be sure to check out the full episode for more.

How Did You Find Bitcoin And Fall Down The Rabbit Hole?

I was walking down the street one day and tripped over an OpenDime, then Googled OpenDime and fell down the Bitcoin Rabbit hole!

How Has Bitcoin Changed Your Life?

It gives me hope for humanity — Bitcoin is a catalyst for people to understand how they have been enslaved, Bitcoin offers a contrast to the existing system — the juxtaposition to the current system helps illustrate the fraud that people have been conditioned to think is normal.

Money and timekeeping are at the heart of every civilization — Bitcoin offers an alternative to both of these. Fiat money is a control system — it is important to understand that fiat time is also a control system.

What Do You Consider To Be The Most Amazing Thing About Bitcoin?

The way the game theory scales in P2P relationships  — whether it is person to person or nation to nation.

How Would You Advise Someone To Learn About Bitcoin? What Are Your Favorite Podcasts, Articles And Books?

New people should prioritize securing their bitcoin for the long haul.

The technological/philosophical/economic aspects of bitcoin can be overwhelming. I like to emphasize “Secure your ticket on the life raft first!” Everything else can follow after that!

Do not forget to subscribe to the new Fed Watch: Bitcoin And Macro feed. It will be separate from Bitcoin Magazine. Exclusively on the new feed, you’ll find our next interview with the great Max Kaiser. Search for “Fed Watch – Bitcoin and Macro” on your podcast app.

In this episode of Bitcoin Magazine’s “Fed Watch,” Christian Keroles and Ansel Lindner discuss the broad macroeconomic atmosphere in which bitcoin finds itself. They touched on bitcoin mining, price, the dollar, commodities and the economy in general. In many ways, markets are in the quiet before the storm. After the 2020 crash and subsequent rally has now run their course, markets are going to resume previous trends.

In our bitcoin mining commentary, we focus on the behavior of hash rate over the last few months and the unique market for mining rigs globally. The hash rate has not increased proportionally with price, and miners are enjoying quite high margins right now. Why more hash rate has not joined the market is discussed in depth. Of concern here is the breakdown in supply chains from China. China is currently where many of the mining rigs are manufactured, and it’s where there are large marginal players in hash rate. Supply chains are likely backlogged and breaking down at the same time. Companies can be struggling financially at the same time that they have orders backing up. Lindner and Keroles hope to get a mining expert on the show soon for an interview to ask them some of these important questions that are largely not understood, even by Bitcoin experts.

The hosts also had a fascinating discussion about social media, community building and gaming. The Bitcoin and markets podcast community has built a valuable community on Discord and slowly moved away from Twitter over the last year. Smaller communities where you can build relationships instead of followings may be the future trend.

They wrapped up the episode talking about macro trends and the bitcoin price. It is important to put this rally into context of both past bitcoin behavior and the current macro climate. In an era where employment and solvency are no longer taken for granted, what part does bitcoin play? It takes years or even decades to reform economies to new realities. Bitcoin will not go up in a straight line. The price opened the year at $28,999, and after only 20 days, many people believe it is out of the question that price could break back below that level in a short-term consolidation. Nothing goes up in a straight line.

All of that, and so much more, is covered on this episode. Don’t miss it.

I had the opportunity to sit down with legendary Bitcoin activist/artist cryptograffiti this week to discuss his latest project, “Bitcoin Vs. The Fed.”

You have probably seen cryptograffiti’s art before. He’s well known for his mosaic pictures of Hal Finney and JPMorgan Chase & Co. boss Jamie Dimon, but he’s best known for his art piece “United Nodes Of Bitcoin,” which depicts a U.S. $1 bill with a hooded George Washington and subtle nods to Bitcoin propaganda throughout.

In our conversation, cryptograffiti explained his inspiration for “United Nodes Of Bitcoin” and how “Bitcoin Vs. The Fed” is phase two of that project. “Bitcoin Vs. The Fed” is a project that he bootstrapped to place on billboards in Federal Reserve cities, with Bitcoin propaganda depicted on the backside of the U.S. dollar. He had great success when he launched “United Nodes Of Bitcoin” back in 2015 and has been planning this project since then.

He told me that he wanted to spread the message in the Fed’s backyard and share the idea of sound money with people who might not be as exposed to Bitcoin as folks in more affluent areas. He’s one of the most O.G. Bitcoin artist out there and he is excited for 2021. He has his hands in a couple of projects that could bring NFT-style art to Bitcoin and, with that, a flood of artists.

Cryptograffiti wrapped up the podcast with a positive message to Bitcoin artists out there, telling them to keep on creating. I can’t wait to see what’s up his sleeve next!
