Crypto Industry’s Favorite Messaging App Telegram Surpasses 500 Million Active Users

13/01/2021 by Idelto Editor

Crypto Industry's Favorite Messaging App Telegram Surpasses 500 Million Active Users

Telegram, a popular messaging app within the cryptocurrency space, surpassed 500 million monthly active users during the first week of January, according to Telegram chief executive officer Pavel Durov.

In the last 72 hours, said Durov, the app has seen a massive surge in new users, with an additional 25 million people signing up to use the platform. These new users are coming from all around the world, with the majority – 38% – drawn from Asia.

Some 27% are coming from Europe, 21% from Latin America, and 8% from the Middle East and North Africa (Mena region). Around 200 million people used Telegram in 2018, meaning user growth has exceeded 150% over two years.

Telegram may have benefited from changes to the privacy policy at rival Whatsapp. Recent updates to Whatsapp’s privacy policy require that users share their personal information with parent firm Facebook or stop using the service altogether.

These changes are believed to have prompted users uncomfortable with sharing more of their personal data with Facebook to leave Whatsapp, and join privacy-centric competitors such as Telegram or Signal.

Unlike other competing messaging apps, Telegram does not share personal data and offers encrypted chats.

Posting on his personal Telegram channel on Jan. 12, Durov said:

People no longer want to exchange their privacy for free services. They no longer want to be held hostage by tech monopolies that seem to think they can get away with anything as long as their apps have a critical mass of users.

The Telegram CEO added that “with half a billion active users and accelerating growth, Telegram has become the largest refuge for those seeking a communication platform committed to privacy and security.”

In 2020, Telegram reported new user sign-ups of 1.5 million each day, a far cry from the current influx of people joining the platform. “We’ve had surges of downloads before, throughout our 7-year history of protecting user privacy. But this time is different,” noted Durov.

Until now, all services on Telegram have remained free. However, Durov announced in December that some services may now be monetized. He said additional functions will appear for “business teams and users with advanced needs” and those features will be paid because they are “resource-intensive”. Ordinary users will continue to use Telegram for free, he emphasized.

Telegram attempted to launch its own cryptocurrency called Gram, through the TON blockchain platform, but was blocked by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. That left Pavel Durov, who had raised $1.7 billion from select investors for the project, saddled with a debt of $1.2 billion and $18.5 million in penalties.

Now some investors in TON are preparing a lawsuit against Durov to try and force the businessman “to sell part of Telegram or the entire company and pay off the investors, because he spent money on Telegram,” according to a Forbes report. Durov allegedly spent $500 million of the TON money to upgrade Telegram, something investors claim was not part of the original deal.

What do you think about the influx of new users at Telegram? Let us know in the comments section below.

Bitcoin.com Wallet Adds Shareable Payment Link Feature – Send Bitcoin Cash to Anyone via Text, Email, and Social Media

10/12/2020 by Idelto Editor

At Bitcoin.com, our team is all about spreading the benefits of peer-to-peer electronic cash and our flagship wallet is a testament to our team’s passion. Bitcoin.com’s noncustodial crypto wallet recently upgraded and now offers a new payment link feature that allows anyone to send bitcoin cash by email, and even social apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Slack, Telegram, and Instagram.

Just recently the Bitcoin.com Wallet added a number of new features in the latest 6.10.3 version release. The Bitcoin.com Wallet is a noncustodial bitcoin cash (BCH) and bitcoin (BTC) client that also allows users to store SLP-based tether USDT stablecoins, and Simple Ledger Protocol tokens as well.

In the latest edition of the Bitcoin.com Wallet, our software development team has made it much easier to send transactions in a few different ways. On November 24, the BCH proponent David Bond (@hellodavidbond) tweeted about the Bitcoin.com Wallet’s new “Send Anywhere” feature.

“The Bitcoin.com Wallet now allows you to send [bitcoin cash] the same way you’d share a link, or meme. This is awesome,” Bond tweeted.

After depositing $2 worth of bitcoin cash into the wallet, I simply pressed send and the client allows you to choose the “shareable link” feature.

With the new Send Anywhere feature from the Bitcoin.com Wallet, sending BCH gifts during Christmas or during the Chinese New Year has never been easier. In order to leverage the new Send Anywhere feature, Bitcoin.com Wallet users need to upgrade to the latest 6.10.3 client version.

After depositing some funds into the BCH wallet, simply press “send” to create and send a shareable link. In addition to sending to any BCH wallet by scanning a QR code or sending to one of your own BCH wallets, the client offers a choice called: “shareable link.”

After selecting the shareable link feature, I simply pressed send all and continue and the wallet creates the URL link which can be shared with anyone and anywhere.

Following pressing the “shareable link” tab, the wallet directs you to the page where you enter the amount of bitcoin cash you want to send. With my test wallet containing $2 in bitcoin cash (BCH), I simply pressed “send all,” and pressed “continue” to finalize the transaction. After pressing “continue,” the Bitcoin.com Wallet will create a URL link with the bitcoin cash that can be sent using nearly any application on the web.

You can send the shareable link via text message, email, Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, Slack, Telegram, and basically anywhere you can share a link. Now, remember, you probably want to send the link privately, rather than sharing it in public, as anyone with access to the link can scan the funds.

The wallet allows you to interact with the various methods of sending whether it be on Telegram, email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SMS text, and other online web portals and messaging apps.

After the creation of my $2 BCH payment link, the Bitcoin.com Wallet gave me a choice to send it via a myriad of applications on my device. Since this was only a test, I sent the bitcoin cash to myself via SMS text message, and instantly received the shareable link.

This is an example of the payment link that I sent to myself as an experiment via text message. In order for someone to access the funds, they simply need to scan the QR code using their Bitcoin.com Wallet. Of course, the link shown in this screenshot has been used when I finished this test.

Opening up my Bitcoin.com Wallet version 6.10.3, I selected the little scan QR icon on the top right-hand side of the application, which is located next to the notifications bell icon. I simply scanned the payment link’s QR code, and my $2 worth of bitcoin cash (BCH) was instantly added to my wallet.

Another cool thing about the Bitcoin.com Wallet’s Send Anywhere feature is that if the recipient does not deposit the funds, the user can simply reclaim the bitcoin cash any time they want.

The latest wallet version still gives users the ability to safely store multiple crypto assets including BCH and BTC, offers a portfolio breakdown, the ability to hold stablecoins, and the capacity to purchase and swap coins in a matter of minutes as well. With our secure and super fast Bitcoin.com Wallet, the latest Send Anywhere feature makes sending cryptocurrency to anyone worldwide extremely easy.

Virtual Panda BTM Launched for Colombian Residents: Dispenses BTC, BCH, DAI, and Dash

Virtual Panda BTM Launched for Colombian Residents: Dispenses BTC, BCH, DAI, and Dash

The CEO of Panda Group and the founder of Colombia’s Panda Exchange and physical Panda BTM terminals, Arley Lozano, recently revealed a new product called app.pandabtm.io. The new service is a virtual automated teller machine that dispenses four types of cryptocurrencies; bitcoin cash (BCH), bitcoin (BTC), DAI, and dash (DASH).

The latest effort from Panda Group is virtual Panda BTM, a “low-cost service for Colombians” looking to purchase four different cryptocurrencies. The platform accepts various Colombian payment methods like Baloto, Efecty, and PSE. Alongside this, users can pay the invoice with another cryptocurrency.

News.Bitcoin.com spoke with the CEO of Panda Group, Arley Lozano, who told our newsdesk about the new virtual Panda BTM. The company Panda Group is a well known Colombian-based crypto firm with a variety of services like Panda Exchange and the physical Panda BTM terminals.

Lozano and his team’s Panda BTM machines are located in numerous areas throughout Colombia and Venezuela. The devices allow merchants to accept digital currencies for every point-of-sale and the machines also act as a BTM.

The latest virtual offering offers sales in bitcoin cash (BCH), dash (DASH), bitcoin (BTC), and the stablecoin DAI. Lozano explained that there’s also a Telegram and Whatsapp bot for the Panda BTM as well.

Essentially, the service allows Colombians to purchase these crypto-assets in less than a few minutes. The application does ask for basic identification information during checkout. Prior to purchase users will need to provide a public cryptocurrency address for receiving as well.

Just like Venezuela, crypto-asset demand in Colombia has been feverish during the last three months. The economy has been dealing with the response to the Covid-19 outbreak and Colombia’s central bank recently cut rates to a historic 2.75% low. Economists believe Colombia’s central bank will cut the benchmark rate even lower going forward.

Two weeks ago the national government, Colombia’s central bank, and the finance ministry’s treasury department swapped 2 trillion pesos ($510 million). The Colombian government and central bank have been playing ping pong with trillions worth of swaps. So far the government and central bank have gathered 7 trillion pesos to-date in swap transactions.

Just like most of the citizenry from countries around the world, Colombians are looking to escape the monetary schemes created by the central bank. Cryptocurrencies are widely known in South America for helping individuals remove themselves from hyperinflation.

Statistics from Coin Dance and other trade volume data sites show that peer-to-peer bitcoin trade volumes in Colombia have been through the roof. Panda Group’s latest Panda BTM will add even more crypto-accessibility for Colombia’s residents, Lozano stressed.

What do you think about the virtual Panda BTM? Let us know in the comments section below.

Due to the advancement of cryptocurrency and the widespread of gift cards in the Nigerian market, Prestmit, a Nigerian platform, now provides the absolute solution that gift cards and bitcoin enthusiasts within and outside the country have been looking forward to.

Talking to the CEO of Prestmit, the firm ensures that customers get credited in less than 5 minutes as the payment system is automated, adding that such feat has seen the two-year-old company boast of over a thousand daily transactions.

“We have observed that the best way to grow the business is in one word — trust. And over time, we have created trust in our existing and potential customers and given them assurance. As a matter of fact, we have built a large customer base over the past two years on Whatsapp and Telegram. Now we have set up an automated platform, it can only get better.” he says.

Users can now sell gift cards on Prestmit within 5 minutes, not limited to that, the innovative service also allows users to buy gift cards and pay in local currency or bitcoins. At the same time, users can exchange bitcoins, buy airtime and pay cable bills, all in one platform.

Encryption Standards Threatened Under Pretext of Battling Coronavirus

Encryption Standards Threatened Under Pretext of Battling Coronavirus

Governments around the world have been trying for some time to bypass encryption and backdoor messaging apps. End-to-end encryption was preventing authorities from stopping terrorist attacks, we were told, and personal privacy had to be sacrificed for the greater good. Now, as the coronavirus spreads through the world, the powers-that-be claim public health is being jeopardized by the oversharing of false or misleading information pertaining to the pandemic. The encryption battle is warming up.

Coronavirus Provides the Latest Pretext to Steal Civil Liberties

In the age of social media, misinformation travels fast. Enough has been written about the “fake news” that spread like wildfire during the 2016 Brexit and U.S. Presidential elections, but suffice to say misinformation is once again at the forefront of debate four years on. This time Whatsapp – rather than Facebook and Twitter – is in the cross-hairs of legislators due to the rampant sharing of inaccurate coronavirus information on the platform.

As governments and medical bodies scramble to educate the public on the dangers of coronavirus, Whatsappers have apparently been busy sharing medical misinformation and fake cures, leading to calls from politicians to stop trading unverified info on the encrypted platform. Legislators, of course, want to go one step further than making impassioned pleas to share only sound advice: they want to prohibit encryption without a mandatory backdoor for state access and strip away Section 230 protections.

Notice how much people are pushing proposals that depend on indefinite mass surveillance. This stuff is a wet dream for people who dream of a scary excuse to know the movements of every citizen, all the time. https://t.co/kM9JaJE8W8

— Peter Todd (@peterktodd) March 20, 2020

As Marty’s Bent newsletter lamented on March 20, “Crises are seen as opportunities by sociopaths who want to tighten the grip of their control over you. When the masses are sufficiently scared and fear is palpable in the air the kleptocrats look to pounce,” adding:

In the face of the spread of COVID-19, you better believe the incompetent kleptocrats are licking their lips in anticipation of the Stay Healthy Act they are inevitably going to draft and attempt to force down our throats. They will use “public health and safety” as emotional Trojan Horses to lower your guard and leverage your fear to accept draconian measures that erode your civil liberties.

An End-to-End Privacy Grab

Because Whatsapp messages are encrypted in a way that allows them to be viewed only by sender and recipient, it is argued that such measures would halt the spread of dangerous medical misinformation. Of course, this overlooks the fact that authorities have been seeking to get around encryption protocols for years now. The covid-19 panic is merely the perfect trojan horse to push through a troubling bill that effectively bans end-to-end encryption and facilitates the scanning of internet communication en masse.

US Politicians Want to Ban End-to-End Encryption on Messaging Services like Telegram and Whatsapp

In response to criticism, Whatsapp says users can forward viral messages to special fact-checking accounts – but they are hardly likely to abandon encryption and jeopardize users’ security, and the same is true for pro-encryption tech giants like Apple and Facebook. Last month, Facebook spokesman Thomas Richards told the Washington Post the company was committed to encryption that “protects everyone’s safety from hackers and criminals.”

Ultimately, people should be able to parse legitimate and illegitimate information of their own accord; verifying the validity of any piece of information is but a click away. As one Twitter user said in response to Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar’s plea for accurate information-sharing, “In a democratic country people are entitled to act in their own best interests, do their own research and question the wisdom of those in authority. This isn’t North Korea.”

These days of uncertainty and chaos, your government will use the opportunity to increase its power. The excuse will be your own protection and they will put in place measures that in any other situation it would be unthinkable. Expect mass surveillance.https://t.co/inDOthfOon

EARN IT Bill Presents a Flagrant Threat to Privacy and Security

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies (EARN IT) bill currently progressing through Congress had its first hearing on March 11, and is widely viewed as the biggest threat towards end-to-end encryption. If passed, the act would make encryption providers responsible for “dangerous” or “illegal” user-uploaded content, and grant governments access to encrypted user data. It also places the responsibility for determining “best practices” in the hands of a small, 19-member committee with implicit bias: the committee head is Attorney General William Barr, who has fought tooth and nail to undermine encryption for years.

Before covid-19 supplied a convenient pretext, the bipartisan bill’s advocates claimed it would help to tackle child sexual exploitation. On March 5, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden called the proposal “a transparent and deeply cynical effort by a few well-connected corporations and the Trump administration to use child sexual abuse to their political advantage, the impact to free speech and the security and privacy of every single American be damned.”

It is not just diehard security advocates and activists who should be worried about the potential impact of this draconian act: it’s everyone who values personal liberty, privacy and free speech. If you are uncomfortable with the dystopian vision of governments reviewing all your digital messages and listening to your calls, you should oppose it vigorously. You can sign a petition to reject the Act here.

I know covid and corn kinda dominate the news cycle here, but they are trying to gut encryption in USA. If you live here write your rep, it takes less than 5 minutes https://t.co/HMIbT01jJu

— JerryHowell✪ (@pennykoin1) March 20, 2020

In many ways, EARN IT seeks to replicate the Patriot Act which was hastily pushed through in the wake of 9/11, with coronavirus fears being weaponized to justify the urgent need for greater oversight into people’s movements and activities. It would give ostensibly democratic governments the same obsessive surveillance power as regimes in China and North Korea and stifle independent thought.

Like the coronavirus, the all-out assault on encryption shows no signs of letting up.
