Report: Bored Ape Yacht Club Discord Attacker May Have Been Involved in Previous NFT Phishing Scams

On June 4, 2022, the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Discord server was compromised and a phishing scam targeted non-fungible token (NFT) collectors holding BAYC, Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), and Otherside NFTs. According to an analysis by the Web3 and blockchain auditing and security firm Certik, the BAYC Discord server attacker may have been involved in previous phishing attacks.

Blockchain Security Firm Certik Analyzes the BAYC Discord Phishing Attack

While many NFTs are very expensive, it makes them all the more worthwhile for malicious attackers to steal them. This week the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Discord server was breached and an attacker used a phishing scam to lure victims.

Certik, the Web3 and blockchain auditing and security firm, published an analysis of the attack and from the company’s account, the attacker may have been involved with previous phishing attempts. The attack occurred on Saturday and a total of 32 NFTs valued at roughly $360K were stolen from blue-chip NFT holders.

The NFTs stolen stemmed from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), and NFTs from the Otherdeed collection. Certik’s report says the phishing site was a “carbon copy of the official projects website, yet with subtle differences.”

There were no social media links on the site and there was a tab added titled “claim free land.” After some victims were hooked by the phony phishing ad, the attacker received a number of NFTs and then proceeded to sell them.

The attackers managed to acquire 142 ether and Certik notes that it is likely 100 ETH was sent to the mixing application Tornado Cash. Certik summarizes why the researchers believe some evidence shows that a fraction of ether the hacker acquired was sent to Tornado Cash and possibly sent to one address.

“Whilst it’s impossible to be certain that the 99.5 ETH redeemed by 0x2917… are the funds associated with today’s attack, it is certainly probable that these are the stolen funds post mixer due to the 20.5 ETH being sent to the depositor address,” Certik’s report notes.

The Certik researcher’s analysis adds:

The majority of the funds were sent to [Externally Owned Account (EOA)] 0x5bC1…, which is where they remain at the time of writing.

The blockchain security firm says that links indicate that 0x5bC1 is likely “not only associated with the BAYC phishing attack today, but also previous phishing attacks.” The company mentioned the fact that BAYC was targeted on April 25, 2022, when an attacker compromised the NFT collection’s Instagram account.

At that time, the hacker got away with 888 ether worth of non-fungible tokens by posting a scam link to a fake airdrop. “Users were prompted to sign a ‘safeTransferFrom’ transaction,” Certik’s report concludes. Prior to the Instagram exploit at the end of April, on the first day of April, Mutant Ape Yacht Club #8,662 was stolen via a phishing scam posted to the Discord channel. The celebrity Seth Green recently fell victim to a phishing attack and lost his Bored Ape to the scam. Bored Ape #8,398 called “Fred” was supposed to play a role in Green’s new series called “White Horse Tavern.”

Instagram Is Working on Bringing NFTs to the Platform in the 'Near Term,' Says Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg

In December 2021, the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, discussed how the firm was looking into non-fungible token (NFT) technology during an ask-me-anything (AMA) session. Three months later, at the South by Southwest (SXSW) event in Texas, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained Instagram plans to introduce NFTs in the “near term.”

Meta CEO Hints NFT Features Are Coming to Instagram

It seems NFTs are coming to Instagram soon, according to statements from Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg at SXSW this week. Zuckerberg spoke with Shark Tank’s Daymond John at the event, and he explained that Instagram users will be able to mint NFTs as well.

News concerning Instagram’s venture into the NFT world originally stemmed from the company’s CEO ,Adam Mosseri, during an AMA. Furthermore, the news publication the Financial Times (FT) spoke with unnamed sources familiar with the matter at the end of January 2022.

FT’s report quotes the unnamed sources who said both Meta and Instagram are conversing about “launching a marketplace for users to buy and sell NFTs.” Zuckerberg’s details to the Shark Tank co-star indicate the launch might be sooner than most think. While the Meta CEO did not share many details, he said: “We are working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term.” Zuckerberg added:

I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but, over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.

Meta Sells Diem IP, Firm Intends to Grow With the Metaverse

Zuckerberg has shown interest in blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in the past and allegedly his pet goat is named “Bitcoin.” Just recently, Meta’s cryptocurrency project Diem was discarded by the firm in order to be sold, and then the Diem intellectual property (IP) was eventually purchased by Silvergate this year.

Facebook also rebranded the social media application’s parent company name to Meta. With help from its subsidiary Oculus and other means, the company intends to bolster the network of 3D virtual worlds called the metaverse.

Content Subscription Service Onlyfans Adds Ethereum-Based NFT Profile Feature

The internet content subscription service Onlyfans has announced the launch of a feature that leverages non-fungible token (NFT) technology. The newly-added feature, introduced on Thursday, gives Onlyfans members the ability to display authenticated NFTs as their profile pictures.

Onlyfans Steps Into the Realm of NFTs

The London-based content subscription service Onlyfans is well known for its direct funding for content creators, its one-time tips, the firm’s pay-per-view (PPV) features, and of course, NSFW content.

This week, Onlyfans has revealed it is experimenting with blockchain technology as the firm is allowing users to show off their NFTs. According to a report from Reuters, Onlyfans CEO Ami Gan explained that the move is meant to empower the platform’s userbase.

“Our mission is to empower creators to own their full potential,” Gan explained to the Reuters author Elizabeth Culliford. “This feature is the first step in exploring the role that NFTs can play on our platform.”

Onlyfans is behind the eight ball when it comes to joining the NFT industry, as a large swathe of well-known businesses and popular brands have already jumped in. Moreover, Twitter’s verified NFT profile feature is similar to the Onlyfans NFT profile concept. Twitter launched the feature last month.

On Febraury 6, Bitcoin.com News reported on Alphabet’s (Google) plans to explore blockchain and Web3 technology. Furthermore, Alphabet’s subsidiary Youtube published a blog post explaining that it has plans to leverage non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said Instagram is exploring NFTs and reports note that Meta is also experimenting with the technology.

According to Onlyfans CEO Ami Gan, the NFT support will be for Ethereum-based NFTs, and in order to know they are verified, an Ethereum logo mark will be present. The company didn’t disclose whether or not it would support other blockchains that support NFT tech going forward.

Instagram Is ‘Exploring NFTs’ to ‘Make Them More Accessible to a Wider Audience,’ Says CEO

Instagram Is 'Exploring NFTs' to 'Make Them More Accessible to a Wider Audience,' Says CEO

According to the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, the social media application is looking into non-fungible token (NFT) technology. During an ask-me-anything (AMA) session on Instagram, Mosseri said that the company wants to make NFTs “more accessible to a wider audience.”

Instagram CEO: ‘We Are Definitely Actively Exploring NFTs’

Following the firm’s parent company Facebook transforming itself into Meta, Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri discussed NFT technology on Saturday. The Instagram story was part of a series of AMA questions directed at the company’s lead executive. When asked his thoughts on NFT integration with Instagram, Mosseri explained the company was looking into the idea.

“Nothing to announce yet, but we are definitely actively exploring NFTs and how we can make them more accessible to a wider audience,” Mosseri elaborated. “I think it’s an interesting place where we can play, and also a way to hopefully help creators,” the Instagram CEO added.

Alleged Instagram NFT Features and Creator Week

Mosseri did not go further in his Instagram story and the CEO did not mention any specifics about the company adding NFT support. Toward the end of May, Instagram hosted its first annual “Creator Week” which showcased non-fungible tokens and NFT creators. In July, software developer Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots of Instagram’s alleged plans to incorporate NFTs.

— Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) June 21, 2021

Furthermore, Paluzzi also shared an alleged leaked feature that allows Instagram users to bid on NFT collectibles within the app. The developer also explained at the time that Instagram would likely support Facebook’s Novi blockchain project and native crypto asset. Instagram and Facebook are not the only social media platforms to explore blockchain as Twitter launched a BTC tipping feature at the end of September and said it was exploring NFT authentication.

Besides saying Instagram was “exploring NFTs” and trying to scale to a “wider audience,” much like its parent Facebook, Instagram is pretty tight-lipped about such features. Three days ago, Polygon and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six venture capital company announced the creation of a $200 million fund to bolster social media tied to Web3 and blockchain technology.

John McAfee’s Death Ignites ‘Dead Man’s Switch’ Theory — Widow Says He ‘Was Not Suicidal’

John McAfee's Death Ignites 'Dead Man's Switch' Theory — Widow Says He 'Was Not Suicidal'

At age 75, the former antivirus tycoon and cryptocurrency advocate, John McAfee, passed away by reported suicide. McAfee was a wild and charismatic man but prior to his death, he was facing tax-related charges and extradition to the United States. For the last few days, the internet has seen myriad theories and assessments of McAfee’s wild rollercoaster of life and death.

Jeffrey Epstein Conspiracies and a ‘Dead Man’s Switch’ Theory Follow McAfee’s Death in Spain

Three days ago, Bitcoin.com News reported on the death of John McAfee after the Catalan justice department in Spain announced his alleged suicide. Prior to McAfee’s reported death, the Spanish high court ruled in favor of the U.S. government’s attempt to extradite him. Spanish officials told the newspaper, El Pais, that “everything pointed to suicide.”

However, when the news went viral on the web, many said they believe McAfee would never take his own life, and speculation about a ‘dead man’s switch’ conspiracy began to circulate. Basically, a dead man’s switch is a switch that is activated when the human operator is either dead or incapacitated in some way.

John McAfee's Death Invokes 'Dead Man's Switch' Theory — Widow Says He 'Was Not Suicidal'
John McAfee’s death has been tied to Q Anon theories. Following the alleged suicide, McAfee’s Instagram posted a picture with the letter “Q” raising a lot of suspicions. However, McAfee has said in the past the Instagram account is not associated with him and the “Q” post has since been deleted.

One theory spreading around various circles is that McAfee had evidence against the U.S. government and a number of global bureaucrats. On October 15, 2020, from a Barcelona jail, McAfee tweeted: “I am content in here. I have friends. The food is good. All is well. Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine.”

McAfee’s Epstein reference refers to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein who ostensibly took his own life in a New York jail cell. McAfee’s cryptic statements have been the primers for most of the wild speculation surrounding his death. An hour after the news of McAfee’s death spread across the internet, McAfee’s official Instagram posted an image of a bold letter “Q.”

A while back, before his death, John McAfee said he held incriminating evidence against governments and politicians. Many of McAfee’s old tweets have sparked feverish speculation since the former antivirus tycoon’s death.

Still, McAfee had said in the past that the Instagram account was not run by him, and he claimed the person running the account was a “troll who trolled me for years.” The “Q” Instagram post still made people think about the group Q Anon, an organization that believes the world is run by a “deep state.” The post has since been deleted on Instagram, but several Q Anon members said that the image contained metadata that leads to “31+ terabytes of incriminating data” against the U.S. government, the CIA, and two Bahamian officials. However, others claim the “Q” picture merely held standard Facebook metadata.

People have also been discussing an Ethereum-based token that was associated with McAfee at one time. For instance, people said Instagram’s metadata led them to an Ethereum smart contract called “Epstein,” which shows an ERC20 token called “whackd (WHACKD).” Because the Epstein smart contract and whackd tokens have been seeing some onchain movement, people believe these coins are directly connected to McAfee. There’s a number of 4chan posts claiming that the “Q” Instagram post and the whackd ERC20s are connected.

Theories stemmed from the 4chan forum, Reddit, and Twitter.

The Whackd Tattoo and Alleged 31 Terabytes of Incriminating Data

The theory also discusses McAfee’s prior statements and his arm tattoo that says “whackd.” McAfee explained at one time that he knew the government was coming for him.

“Getting subtle messages from U.S. officials saying, in effect: ‘We’re coming for you McAfee! We’re going to kill yourself.’ I got a tattoo today just in case. If I suicide myself, I didn’t. I was whackd. Check my right arm. $WHACKD available only on McAfeedex.com,” McAfee explained in November 2019. In the summer, months before he got the tattoo, he also said:

I’ve collected files on corruption in governments. For the first time, I’m naming names and specifics. I’ll begin with a corrupt CIA agent and two Bahamian officials. Coming today. If I’m arrested or disappear, 31+ terabytes of incriminating data will be released to the press.

A week after that tweet, McAfee wrote: “The instant I disappear the information is released. Those named would be crazy to kill me or collect me. They are simply praying I live forever. If it’s released, revenge takes over and I’m dead.”

Adding to the speculation, a former 8kun administrator associated with Q Anon told Newsweek this week that McAfee may be leveraging a dead man’s switch.

“Regarding John McAfee: He was in jail. He has a dead man switch. He ‘died’. His dead man switch has not (yet) activated,” the former 8kun administrator said on Telegram. “We will know soon if he is really dead, or managed to escape from prison under the guise of a ‘suicide’ [i.e. Epstein.]”

Most of the theories and evidence behind the dead man’s switch theory stem from mere speculation, the controversial Q Anon group, and very little evidence at all. The reasons being, the Instagram post has been contested because McAfee said he didn’t operate the account in the past. And as mentioned above, metadata from the Instagram post is standard Facebook photograph metadata.

Further, the ERC20 tokens could be moved by anyone who owns the tokens, and these coins show no direct connection to John McAfee or “31+ terabytes” of so-called hidden data. For now, the story is wildly speculative and considered a conspiracy theory that doesn’t hold much water.

McAfee’s Widow Wants a ‘Thorough’ Investigation

John McAfee’s wife Janice and John’s close associates, however, believe he was not suicidal. Speaking with the press on Friday, Janice McAfee’s lawyer, Javier Villalba said the official autopsy was taking place and the family wants an independent second autopsy done as well.

“I blame the U.S. authorities for this tragedy. Because of these politically motivated charges against him. My husband is now dead,” Janice told the press at a conference. “His last words to me were: I love you and I will call you in the evening” Janice said. “He would have never quit this way, he would never take his life in this way, ever. Those words are not words of somebody who is suicidal,” she added.

Janice McAfee wants a “thorough” investigation and she highlighted during her statements that American politics would not allow John to be a free man in the United States.

“Even though he was born in England, America was his home,” Janice said. “He came there when he was a child. He had his first girlfriend there, his first case, you know, his first job. He made his first millions there and he wanted to be there. But, you know, politics just wouldn’t allow for that to happen.”
