Crypto Market Is ‘Development Vector’ of Nation’s Digital Economy, Ukraine President Says

Crypto Market Is ‘Development Vector’ of Nation’s Digital Economy, Ukraine President Says

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has highlighted the importance of launching a legal digital assets market in his country during a working visit to the U.S. The Ukrainian head of state met with top investors including from the cryptocurrency industry.

President Zelensky Highlights Importance of Ukraine’s Virtual Assets Market

Speaking to venture capital funds and Silicon Valley accelerators, Volodymyr Zelensky praised the opportunity to discuss the prospects for the development of the IT sector and innovations in Ukraine. In his opening remarks at the event, quoted in a press release, the Ukrainian leader emphasized his country has made a “real breakthrough in the digital sphere” and a “huge leap towards creating a digital state” over the past year.

Crypto Market Is ‘Development Vector’ of Nation’s Digital Economy, Ukraine President Says

At a meeting with representatives of the Stellar Development Foundation, the president expressed hope that in the near future the institution will find more opportunities to expand its activities and team as well as to eventually establish an R&D center in the East European nation. “After all, Ukraine is now the best magnet with blockchain and crypto specialists in Europe,” Zelensky remarked, further emphasizing:

And one of the vectors of development of Ukraine’s digital economy is the launch and development of a legal innovative market for virtual assets.

Earlier this year, Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation signed a memorandum of understanding with the foundation aimed at supporting the ongoing efforts of the Ukrainian government to develop a legal framework for the country’s expanding crypto space. The agreement also covers Stellar’s participation in building the infrastructure for the Ukrainian national digital currency.

Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov, who was part of the delegation, noted that Ukraine has one of the world’s largest blockchain developer communities and is working to become an attractive jurisdiction for both local and foreign crypto companies. He added that the country is also modernizing its payments market which will allow the National Bank of Ukraine to issue the digital hryvnia.

The current administration in Kyiv has maintained a generally positive attitude towards the crypto and blockchain industry but is yet to adopt comprehensive regulations for its activities. A draft law “On Virtual Assets,” which was recently revised, is expected to be adopted by the end of this year.

In July, government officials and business representatives produced a roadmap to transform Ukraine into a leader in cryptocurrency integration. A central part of the new strategy is the plan to develop the country’s virtual assets market within the next three years.

Crypto Embraces VR as Virtual Conferences Replace Physical Events

Crypto Embraces VR as Virtual Conferences Replace Physical Events

Remote bitcoin events have been boosted by the postponement or cancellation of real world crypto conferences due to the coronavirus outbreak. With many employees now working from home where possible, firms have begun switching to virtual meetings, prompting renewed interest in VR equipment and hinting at the decentralized future of crypto meetings and events.

No Office, No Problem: Business as Usual in Crypto

While companies grapple with the consequences of the ongoing pandemic, the crypto industry is in pretty good shape. For a start, several major platforms – including exchanges such as Kraken – have employed dispersed workforces since day one. Others, like Messari and Coinbase, have gone remote-first indefinitely and canceled all business travel.

Generally speaking, crypto is extremely mobile with a disproportionately high percentage of freelance and remote workers, from developers, designers and programmers to content managers, analysts and consultants. Indeed, many crypto projects don’t have a physical headquarters and for all intents and purposes exist in the digital realm.

Physical headquarters create a single point of failure. @CasaHODL is a remote-only company.

— Jameson Lopp (@lopp) March 10, 2020

So while centralized tech giants like Apple, Google, and Amazon may see productivity fall as offices fall dark, that shouldn’t be the case for the Messaris and Coinbases of the world. At least not to the same extent.

A Clutch of Canceled Crypto Events

Of course, meatspace events, conferences, hackathons and meetings are a staple of the cryptosphere, drawing thousands of delegates from all over the world. But with physical gatherings being strongly discouraged by governments, a pivot towards virtual conferences is inevitable.

The world’s largest blockchain expo, scheduled for March 17 in London, was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic and so too was Bitcoin 2020 in San Francisco. The Paris Blockchain Week Summit was another major crypto gathering pushed back until the end of the year. Expect more dominos to fall in the weeks and months ahead as event organizers pull the plug. But do such industry events really have to be canceled, or can they happen online?

Remote Meetings Draw Near

Remote events, albeit on a smaller scale than grand conferences in lush locales, have been quick to fill the void. Bitcoin meet-ups on the horizon include March 14’s Lightning Loop, a virtual conference featuring Lightning Lab’s Alex Bosworth, and March 17’s Socratic Seminar featuring Michael Folkson, organizer of the London Bitcoin Devs meet-up group. Those keen to dial in can find more details on the Bitcoin VR Degenerates Telegram.

Tech conference Collision, meanwhile, has announced that its June event will go ahead – only it won’t happen in Toronto but online, with the conference rechristened Collision from Home. In a blog post, the firm said previous attendees had already availed themselves of web and mobile to virtually engage with fellow delegates, watch presentations, and participate in workshops from the comfort of their homes.

Companies such as Hopin, an all-in-one live events platform for distributed online communities, seem like the most likely profiteers of a scenario where networking events occur online rather than in-person. Actually, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to telepresence video solutions.

Our team did all of our 1:1s in VR today, had a team-wide happy hour last night, and some of us have migrated to full VR work settings.

We are working remote for an unknown amount of time and I am SUPER bullish on VR https://t.co/svba2q2D9J

— Eric Turner (@ericturnr) March 10, 2020

One annual gathering that won’t have to postpone or cancel is Remote Crypto Con, scheduled for June 24-26. It’s already tabbed the likes of Coinshares’ Meltem Demirors and The Block’s Mike Dudas as speakers.

Could this become the norm? In the short term, yes. Messari chief Ryan Selkis has urged “anyone in crypto to spend $200 on a VR headset before there are shortages. The tech isn’t perfect, but it’s very good. Get familiar with the platforms, and keep community strong during what will likely be a prolonged shutdown of live events.”

While a move towards more mobile workforces might occur after the pandemic has passed, it could – Selkis suggests – manifest in remote employees using VR headsets to create the impression of working side-by-side with colleagues in the same physical space. Immersive AR/VR hardware and software can create a more engaging experience than can be provided from simply dialing into a conference. The coronavirus might cause the streets to empty, but crypto communities needn’t disappear.

Do you think virtual conferences can replace real world events, or is the technology still too new? Let us know in the comments section below.

Simple Ledger Protocol Shines During the Final Day of TNABC Miami

On Friday, The North American Bitcoin Conference (TNABC) convened for its final day with a great deal of well known speakers from the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry. The slew of speakers discussed topics like the future of crypto mining, SLP tokens, digital currency enterprise solutions, creating new markets, and what to expect from government regulation in 2020.

TNABC Wraps Up the Final Day

Miami Blockchain Week continues as the final day of the seventh annual TNABC event comes to a close. Blockchain Week will proceed with the Miami Bitcoin Hackathon 2020 hosted at the Blockchain Center Miami on January 17-19. At the conference, Moe Levin started the day’s festivities with a few remarks which were followed by a talk with Bloq cofounder Matthew Rozak. The entrepreneur discussed the future of mining and the project Titan’s idea to tokenize hashpower. TNABC participants also heard from bitcoin pioneer Charlie Shrem, and Bitangels founder Michael Terpin discussing enterprise blockchains with Bakkt’s head of information security Adam Healy.

TNABC attendees listened to crypto pioneer Charlie Shrem and heard about protocols like the RSK network.

Stefan Rust Introduces Bitcoin.com’s New SLP Mint

After the lunch break, the crowd heard from Bitcoin.com’s CEO Stefan Rust about creating new markets and opening the doors of accessibility to new crypto users. Rust explained how crypto and blockchain solutions continue to break the barriers of traditional concepts and today’s incumbents.

During Rust’s talk, he gave an in-depth explanation about the Simple Ledger Protocol (SLP) built on Bitcoin Cash and how the SLP universe has grown exponentially. He explained there’s been over 500,000 onchain SLP-based transactions and more than 6,600 coins minted so far. Rust told the audience about Bitcoin.com’s SLP dividend calculator that allows people to distribute BCH or SLP token dividends. During the first day of TNABC more than a hundred people who participated in the Golden Ticket scratch-off promotion were airdropped tokens. Rust distributed the dividends while onstage and a few TNABC attendees revealed they got 500 LEAD tokens.

Bitcoin.com CEO Stefan Rust speaking about creating new markets, the Simple Ledger Protocol, and Bitcoin.com’s new Mint.

Rust also introduced Bitcoin.com’s new Mint, a service that allows people to keep a portfolio of SLP-based tokens in a simple-to-use noncustodial web wallet. The mint’s primary feature allows users to create and distribute SLP tokens if they have a small fraction of BCH in their wallet. Users can create a token in a matter of minutes with a specified token amount, custom name, and the number of decimals as well. Bitcoin.com Mint users can also upload a document like a white paper or add a document hash and URL. Rust further explained how there are so many concepts that can be tokenized like reward points, loyalty coupons, and air miles.

“Imagine if we can get these concepts into tokens and get the users that are adopting and driving those types of reward and loyalty points toward using a cryptocurrency,” Rust emphasized. “That’s how we’re going to get new users to come to the cryptocurrency world — With things that they are familiar with and with brands that they trust.”

Simple Ledger Protocol Gathers More Attention in Miami

Following Rust’s talk, the crowd listened to a fireside chat with the Bitcoin Center Miami’s Eryka Gemma who discussed Miami becoming a hub of innovation. The audience also saw the hosts of the podcast Bad Crypto do a live broadcast on stage with Moe Levin, Charlie Shrem, and Marshall Long. In the exhibit hall, TNABC attendees saw the same exhibits from the day prior and a few new ones as well.

TNABC attendees saw discussions about Miami becoming a hub of innovation and a panel about enterprise blockchain solutions.

For instance, the Simpleledger.io developers set up a small table and gave people pamphlets about the SLP framework and tokens. The SLP pamphlets explained how SLP tokens are SPV friendly, onchain, scriptable, extensible, open source, and robust with a limited set of consensus rules making SLP tokens reliable. Between the Simpleledger.io developers and the Bitcoin.com booth, the Simple Ledger Protocol and Bitcoin Cash received a lot of attention during the conference.

If people hadn’t heard about the Simple Ledger Protocol before, then they sure heard about the SLP universe and tokens at The North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami.

Overall most of the attendees news.Bitcoin.com chatted with said they enjoyed the event and didn’t seem to mind it being a touch smaller than 2018 and 2019. There were plenty of exhibits, a number of well known speakers from the crypto industry, and ample media attention as well. While many went home after the conference, lots of developers are sticking around the city until Sunday for the 2020 Bitcoin Hackathon.

BTC Miami, the popular blockchain event hosted in beautiful downtown Miami, has kicked into high gear as the James L. Knight Center filled with crypto and blockchain supporters from all around the world. Thursday’s opening remarks started with TNABC host Moe Levin and the city of Miami’s Mayor Francis Suarez. The mayor discussed blockchain and crypto innovation within Miami’s borders in order to establish the city as a hub of innovation. Suarez also announced that this week was an officially recognized event by the city called Blockchain Week Miami.

TNABC 2020 was filled with all types of crypto companies and exhibits.

The official concluded his talk by presenting Levin with a certificate from the city. Following Suarez, Bobby Lee, the founder of the wallet card Ballet, discussed how people can make digital currencies more accessible and referenced the cold storage Ballet card. TNABC attendees heard from bnktothefuture.com’s Simon Dixon, Veriblock’s Justin Fisher, and a climactic mid-day speech from blockchain investor Brock Pierce. Pierce explained how crypto solutions and blockchain could transform the world for the better.

Bitcoin.com’s Miami Token Airdrop and Spreading SLP Awareness

The exhibit hall was filled with TNABC attendees checking out all the companies showcasing platforms, devices, and artwork. Bitcoin.com gave away bitcoin cash-loaded Golden Ticket scratch-offs, after having people download the Badger Wallet. After that step, people swept the QR code on their scratch-off ticket, in order to reveal their bitcoin cash (BCH) reward. Then the user had to join the special Telegram group Bitcoin.com created to post their SLP address. When the conference convenes on Friday, people who swept their Golden Tickets will get some special SLP-based Miami Conference tokens airdropped for participating.

The “Miami Token” can be exchanged at the Bitcoin.com booth for special rewards. The Bitcoin.com booth was busy with people learning about peer-to-peer cash and the innovation behind the Simple Ledger Protocol.

BTC Miami 2020 participants need to download the Badger Wallet and then scratch their Golden Ticket for a BCH reward. Then the user needs to join the exclusive BTC Miami Telegram group to post their SLP address. After the SLP address is posted, at some point during the conference participants will be airdropped Miami Conference tokens.

A few members of the SLP development team were in attendance as well including SLP engineer James Cramer. Speaking with news.Bitcoin.com, Cramer gave his thoughts on the crypto conference in Miami.

“The conference has been great so far,” Cramer told news.Bitcoin.com. “Meeting with people face to face that you speak with on the internet. You can do video conference calls and things like that, but meeting people face to face is way better.” The developer also talked about TNABC participants asking the developers about SLP tokens.

“We made new bright green t-shirts that say slp.cash with the SLP logo. People are asking about SLP and they are super interested — I think people are open to trying the Simple Ledger Protocol,” Cramer said.

Massive Crypto and Blockchain Building and Recognition From the City of Miami

Other booths included Edge wallet, Crypto.com, Bitangels, Tradestation, and the Crypto Playhouse. TNABC featured unique artwork as well from crypto artists like Fractalencrypt, Sergey Gordienko, and Lucho Poletti. After lunch, TNABC participants watched a panel on cryptocurrency regulations and law. Additionally, during the remainder of the afternoon, people listened to talks from Edge Wallet’s Paul Puey, crypto pioneer Nick Spanos, Binary Financial’s Harry Yeh and closing remarks from TNABC host Moe Levin. During the event, news.Bitcoin.com spoke with Levin and asked him what he thought about the seventh annual TNABC conference.

TNABC featured a number of artists like Lucho Poletti, Fractalencrypt, and Sergey Gordienko.

“I feel like this event more closely resembles 2015 and 2016 and not that many people have experienced those years,” Levin explained. “What I mean by that is during 2015, it was after the climactic rising price of bitcoin hitting $1,200 with all the hype and then nothing for two years — and we produced this event for 300 to 400 people in 2015 and it was tiny. It was super small compared to the last two years and I believe there were only a few exhibits at the time. But those businesses who attended and some of those exhibitors went on to build what are now some of the biggest companies in crypto.” Levin added:

A lot of people are not aware of the cycles in this industry and what happens is when the market is down, people start building a lot more. They don’t go out much, they don’t hype things, they just build. And when there’s real hype and interest globally, they have the widest nets to capture all the interest.

Additionally, Levin spoke about Miami Mayor Francis Suarez’s speech and the certificate he received earlier in the day. “I would love to take as much credit for making Miami a Bitcoin City but I’m not here every day building a blockchain center and encouraging companies to come here. But the city of Miami is and when they say the quote ‘open for business,’ it is true. It’s also a form of legitimacy from a local government for crypto globally … because it’s a real thing — it’s an official Blockchain Week recognized by Miami. It’s nice man, it feels good.”
