If you are on the lookout for a job in these pressing times, when the coronavirus pandemic has limited public movement and shut down businesses, it’s worth exploring opportunities to work from the relative safety of your home. The number of people doing so globally has been steadily growing, including in the crypto industry which is more decentralized than other sectors.

Working From Home Is Healthier and More Productive

Remote jobs have been on the rise over the past few years. Stats gathered by Virtual Vocations, for example, show a 197% increase in such roles in the company’s database between 2015 and 2019. New openings registered by the telecommuting jobs platform grew by 25% last year, according to its latest annual report. Another source, an analysis conducted by Flexjobs and Global Workplace Analytics, points to a 44% increase of Americans working remotely in the last five years. The study also suggests that remote workers are more productive, better paid and healthier.

Although it’s difficult to precisely estimate the share of remote employees, all jobs in the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry, where this type of employment arrangement is popular, were generally growing last year and in early 2020, as news.Bitcoin.com reported. With restrictions due to the global covid-19 epidemic hitting other sectors hard, the crypto space may be affected too. The decentralized nature of the business, however, is likely to limit the damage to a certain extent. Working from home definitely has certain advantages in that respect.

Blockchain Tops the List of Most In-Demand Tech Skills for 2020

Blockchain Tops the List of Most In-Demand Tech Skills for 2020

If you are planning to start a new career this year, or just improve your value in the jobs market, the best thing that you can do is acquire some blockchain skills. Companies around the world are looking for people with capabilities in this field and it appears that demand far outpaces the supply.

Companies Need Much More Blockchain Talent

New research based on data from the employment-oriented networking platform Linkedin shows that blockchain tops the list of most in-demand hard skills for 2020. The ranking of the most needed skills was made by looking at those that are in high demand relative to their supply. Demand was measured by identifying the skills listed on the career profiles of people who are getting hired at the highest rates. It divided the skills into two groups. Hard skills include specialized knowledge and technical abilities to handle a specific task, while soft skills are more about behavior and thinking, personal traits and cognitive skills.

This high ranking shows how rapid the technology is penetrating the business world, as blockchain wasn’t even on the list a year ago. It has also beaten to the top other popular corporate buzzword fields such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The research further shows that blockchain is the most in-demand skill right now in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia.

Blockchain Tops the List of Most In-Demand Tech Skills for 2020

This analysis was conducted to help corporate recruiters understand what skills are most required for their firms to stay competitive in the business world going forward. Linkedin’s Talent Blog head writer, Bruce Anderson, explained: “Blockchain has emerged from the once shadowy world of cryptocurrency to become a business solution in search of problems. Which means that you don’t have to be in financial services to be seeking new hires who have background and expertise in putting blockchain to use. So, recruiters should start becoming familiar with how blockchain works, what its perceived benefits are, and who are the people best suited to help your company explore where this budding technology might have a role.”

Job Options Range From NASA Scientist to Meme Lord

This isn’t the first time that the career focused social network has shown the rapid growth of employment needs in the field. For example, in December 2018 Linkedin published its “Emerging Jobs Report” for the United States, in which it named “Blockchain Developer” as the most rapidly emerging employment position of the year. According to that report, the position saw growth of 33x on Linkedin’s platform during 2018.

As Linkedin’s Talent Blog explained to recruiters, “Blockchain has become a line of business for a who’s who of the corporate world — IBM, Oracle, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, Amazon, and American Express, to name just a few. Blockchain is now being used in industries ranging from shipping to healthcare, from farming and food safety to entertainment and gaming.” In September 2019, we reported that even NASA announced it needed a data scientist for its Jet Propulsion Laboratory research and development facility in California with experience in cryptocurrency and blockchain.

If you have these much needed skills, a search for wanted ads containing the term ‘Blockchain’ on Linkedin currently shows that there are over 15,500 job vacancies around the world that might fit you. There are also more than 3,700 wanted ads on the site containing the term ‘Cryptocurrency.’ While there are more options for working at traditional companies with blockchain skills, only the crypto world can offer you such cool jobs as ‘Meme Lord,’ bitcoin street artist, and feeder of the hungry.

Coinbase Extends Wegift Partnership to the US

The Daily: Coinbase Expands Gift Card Program, Facebook Seeks Blockchain TalentCoinbase has announced that its trading platform now offers e-gift cards for its customers in the U.S. This means that American users will be able to instantly spend their cryptocurrency balances from the exchange with dozens of new retailers. The development has been achieved by expanding its partnership with the London-based startup Wegift, which supports many well-known brands such as Nike, Tesco, Uber, Google Play, Ticketmaster and Zalando.

Coinbase informed its users that purchasing e-gift cards incurs no withdrawal fees and that bonuses of up to 10 percent make it “smoother than ever to use crypto. Now, you’re just a few clicks away from spending your balance on e-gifts cards for Adidas shoes or your next vacation. Better yet, use some on the holidays — you’re just in time.”

Facebook to Develop Equitable Financial Services?

At the start of 2018, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg set a goal for himself to take back power from centralized systems using “encryption and cryptocurrency.” While the year is nearly over and this resolution remains unfulfilled, his company appears to still be focused on the subject. Recently surfaced ads show that Facebook is looking for data scientists and software engineers to help develop new blockchain solutions, possibly including financial services.

The Daily: Coinbase Expands Gift Card Program, Facebook Seeks Blockchain Talent

The company explains to potential candidates that: “At Facebook, we have established a new team building blockchain technologies. It’s a small, fast-growing, but talented group of people who are passionate about changing the world. Our leadership is experienced and are some of the best people working today in their respective fields.”

“The blockchain team is a startup within Facebook, with a vision to make blockchain technology work at Facebook scale. We’re exploring areas of interest across all facets of blockchain technology. Our ultimate goal is to help billions of people with access to things they don’t have now – that could be things like equitable financial services, new ways to save, or new ways to share information.”

Unicef Invests in Six Blockchain Startups

The Daily: Coinbase Expands Gift Card Program, Facebook Seeks Blockchain TalentThe United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has announced that it will provide backing to six blockchain startups from emerging economies trying to solve global challenges using the technology. The Unicef Innovation Fund will invest up to $100,000 in Atix Labs from Argentina, Onesmart and Prescrypto from Mexico, India’s Statwig, Utopixar from Tunisia and W3 Engineers from Bangladesh. The financial support is meant to help the companies deliver open-source prototypes of blockchain applications within 12 months.

“Blockchain technology is still at an early stage — and there is a great deal of experimentation, failure, and learning ahead of us as we see how, and where, we can use this technology to create a better world,” said Chris Fabian, Principal Adviser at the fund. “That’s exactly the stage when UNICEF Innovation Fund invests: when our financing, technical support, and focus on vulnerable populations can help a technology grow and mature in the most fair and equitable way possible.”

Find a Job at the ICO Bazaar

Investor Information Portal Launches Jobs Board for Cryptocurrency IndustryCryptocurrency investor information portal, ICO Bazaar, will soon be revealing a platform for matching companies with prospective talent. Officially to be launched at the end of August, the jobs board is said to already have over 300 companies listed with more than 1,000 open positions needing to be filled.

The platform will be free of charge for candidates, and companies can get a free month trial for registering before the official launch. The fee for companies is not finalized yet, but the company could say that it will be comparable to the going market rates. “We expect the feedback from our clients from the test period to help us settle the rates,” they explained. Some of the ICO teams using the platform to find new talent include Orca Alliance, Oxygen Trade, and Modern Token Agency.

A Shortage of Professionals

Investor Information Portal Launches Jobs Board for Cryptocurrency IndustryExplaining the decision to launch the new service, the team told news.Bitcoin.com that there is an acute need for talent among projects. “Every ICO has 2-3 opening positions on average, and as we see all of them listed on ICO Bazaar and communicate with them, we see a huge demand for blockchain talents. We researched and found that demand for blockchain specialists grew by 115% in 2017, and there is a shortage of professionals on the market: both for tech and non-tech.”

Earlier this year we reported that while interest in cryptocurrency jobs peaked in December 2017, queries for blockchain positions remained high. The top ten related roles on Indeed, by descending order, were: Developer, Recruiter, Software Engineer, Director IT Digital Strategy & Innovation, Java Developer, C# Developer, Senior QA Engineer, Solution & Proposition Architect, Senior Developer, and lastly Project Manager.

Is this still a good time to join the ICO ecosystem? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
